Reading At School

Bartley Book Club

Our Year 3 and 6 book club is now up and running at lunchtimes through the week.  Our year 6 team are enjoying supporting reading in Year 3 and sharing the enthusiasm for reading right across the school.

Book Study

What we do

At Bartley we believe in developing reading skills through whole class texts which enable greater depth reasoning. Each year group focuses on 1 or 2 different books/themes each half term, through class sessions every day. Through a combination of different reading opportunities and tasks the children have the opportunity to develop all reading skills. These include, retrieval, meaning of words, language for effect, inference, summarising, prediction and explanation.

What are the challenges for children in reading at Bartley.

  • Fluency- decoding/prosody (expression)/comprehension.
  • Stamina and speed of processing.
  • To be able to retrieve from across the text
  • Making connections
  • Vocabulary breadth
  • Inference (This is not a learned skill – it is a reasoning process. Readers need to practice thinking aloud, developing vocabulary used in context).
